FAQS

MD Home Tutoring Benefits

Are you a qualified teacher?

Yes, I am a school teacher with bachelor and post-graduate qualifications. I have been teaching for over 20 years in public, independent and systemic school systems in the Greater Sydney and Illawarra areas.

Do you have a Working With Children Check number?

Yes, I have been cleared to work with children in both volunteer and paid roles. My number is WWC0322905E and it is valid until 21/03/2029.

What is unique about your tutoring style?

There are many great tutors out there but I have discovered over the course of my career that I am more generous with my time than the average tutor. For example, I have been known to spend hours creating customised resources to fast-track a student's progress in specific areas by months, even years.

Do tutoring sessions need to occur on a weekly basis?

Yes. Apart from mutual cancellations due to illness or other circumstances, sessions should occur weekly for your child to make meaningful gains. I do offer one-off tutoring sessions for last-minute assignments, but this is not my recommended approach. For tutoring to be effective, it needs to be consistent and reliable.

How will I know my child is progressing?
I constantly try to ascertain your child's progress through questioning, informal observation and close analysis of work samples. I am able to provide you with oral feedback, comments via email and more formal written feedback if required.

Do you tutor students with additional learning needs?
Yes, I have extensive experience in working with students with learning disabilities, ASD, dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, anxiety and cognitive difficulties. I have also worked with students who are gifted, talented and twice exceptional.

Can I come to your house?
No, I believe that students are more comfortable and learn better when they are in their own home. I also like transparency, which means I encourage parents to be present and listen in on tutoring sessions if they wish.

Do you have different rates for different age groups?

Generally, no, because I believe every Stage of learning is vital. If anything, I'm a strong believer in quality early intervention programs in Years K-2. These sessions can require considerable preparation as young children may lack independence and often require constant engagement. From experience, every hour spent assisting a young child with a learning challenge saves countless hours of tuition in the later years of school!

Why is tutoring beneficial?

If you greatly value the power of education, but you're having doubts about your child's progress in one or more subjects, private tutoring could be a good option. Tutoring, however, can be a long-term venture as academic success is not achieved overnight. I am willing to invest time and effort into students until momentum in learning starts to kick in. Moreover, when given the opportunity to get to know students well, I will ensure that gaps in knowledge and skills are continually revisited and reinforced.
